TulbaghWine & Country Escapes

Best for Wine lovers, scenic day trips, leisurely lunches and country weekends

Some days deserve a slower pace. A drive into the countryside, mountains on the horizon and time to enjoy a glass of something made just down the road.

Wine tasting in Tulbagh offers exactly that kind of escape. Around the valley, historic estates and smaller wine farms invite you to discover local wines, spend time among the vineyards and turn a simple outing into a day worth remembering.

You don’t need to squeeze every cellar into one afternoon. Choose two or three of these stops, leave room for lunch and give yourself time to enjoy the places behind the wines.

Manleys

Manley Wine Estate

When your idea of a wine-country outing includes a good meal and time to settle in, Manley Wine Estate is an inviting place to start.

This boutique estate on Winterhoek Road brings together wine tasting, vineyard accommodation and dining in a mountain setting. Taste Manley’s wines at its private cellar, then make time for The Taste restaurant, where locally inspired dishes and a regularly changing menu give you another reason to linger.

For a day trip, it offers the pleasure of having wine and food in one destination. For a longer escape, its B&B rooms and family cottages give you the option of staying in the valley and exploring at your own pace.

Montpellier

Montpellier Wine Estate

A visit to Montpellier brings a little of Tulbagh’s history into your glass. Established in 1714, the estate combines a Cape Dutch homestead, a hillside chapel and vineyard surroundings beneath the valley’s mountains.

Its wine and MCC tastings make it a lovely choice for visitors who enjoy discovering an estate’s character alongside its wines. Allow yourself time to take in the setting rather than treating the tasting as a quick stop on the way somewhere else.

The food offering gives you another reason to stay a while. The current VH listing includes weekday cheese platters and pizzas from Friday to Sunday. Check what is available when booking, particularly if you’re planning to make this your lunch stop.

Lemberg

Lemberg Wine Estate

If you enjoy finding a smaller producer with its own story to tell, add Lemberg Wine Estate to your Tulbagh list.

This family-owned boutique farm sits among vineyards with views of the Witzenberg and Winterhoek mountains. Its approach centres on small-scale winemaking and wines that reflect the place where the grapes are grown, making it an appealing stop for curious wine lovers.

Alongside Pinotage, Syrah and premium blends, Lemberg’s range includes the distinctive Hárslevelü. If that name is new to you, it offers a good reason to ask questions, try something different and discover a wine you might otherwise have passed by.

With accommodation also available on the estate, Lemberg can become part of a longer vineyard escape as well as a stop on your day’s outing.
